The city of Stavanger lies in south-west Norway and is the country’s fourth largest city. The new SpareBank 1 building is one of the largest timber-framed office buildings in northern Europe. The decision to use wood was made on account of its low energy consumption during production and the pleasant atmosphere it creates. It also blends seamlessly into the city’s architectural skyline, since Stavanger is also home to one of the best-preserved settlements of timber houses. Another benefit gained by using timber was the shorter construction time.

- Short description
- The building contains three to seven storeys. At its heart is the glass-roofed atrium, which contains one of the world’s largest wooden staircases. This was installed without any central supports, meaning that a particular challenge during construction was calculating how to accommodate the point loads of the beams. The stairs are also subjected to high levels of mechanical wear and tear through use. Adequate slip resistance also needed to be provided in order to guarantee the safety of staff and customers.
