Water-soluble, boron-free fire retardant for wood impregnation
Fire protection for wood
Building with wood? Let’s get it done!
Wood as a building material: popular, but combustible! As an organic building material, wood is enjoying something of a revival. Its natural charm, its warmth and cosiness have a positive effect on wellbeing. It also has excellent structural, mechanical and physical properties. But even if wood is processed differently as a building material, it is no different from ordinary firewood – it is combustible! If wood and wood-based materials are not adequately protected against fire, components and structures made from these substrates can quickly ignite. If the fire spreads, it can cause major damage to property and even endanger lives. The bottom line is that fire protection for wood minimises the risk of fires spreading and protects human life and property.
The solution: Fire protection systems from Remmers
The use of wood in areas with elevated fire protection requirements is therefore limited. Remmers fire protection systems for wood represent a pragmatic solution that makes it possible to opt for wood, particularly in areas with elevated fire protection requirements. Our fire protection systems for wood have been tested in accordance with the relevant national and international standards and have been granted general approval by the building authorities. Remmers fire protection systems for wood can counteract the spread of smoke and fire in the event of a fire – this helps to ensure that people and animals can be rescued and fires can be extinguished effectively.
Impregnation & decorative coating system
Fire protection impregnation using the vacuum pressure procedure
This Remmers fire protection system consists of a fire protection impregnation, which can optionally be given a decorative coating. The core of the system is the fire protection salt Adolit BSS1, which makes the wood flame-retardant in the vacuum pressure procedure. If a fire breaks out, physical and chemical processes take place: water is separated from the salt and released (cooling / quenching effect). Chemical reactions with oxygen are also prevented. In the wood structure, the wood is sealed off from the flame/heat by active, forced charring.
The Induline DW-618 (WF) / LW-718 (WF) one-pot coating systems, which are designed to coordinate perfectly with Adolit BSS1, can then be used to create a decorative, protective finish on the wood in opaque or translucent colours (e.g. RAL colours) without impairing the flame retardancy. Both coating systems preserve the natural structure of the wood due to the moderate application quantities.

Intumescent and protective coatings: fire protection for roller, brush and spray application
Functional coatings based on the intumescent principle are another technical option for protecting wood against fire. Here, the fire protection function for wood is provided by a special primer coating.
This type of fire protection system for wood includes an intumescent coating and an optional protective coating. When exposed to high temperatures or direct fire, the transparent Remmers intumescent fire protection coating forms a microporous foam layer (intumescent coating) that can be up to 3 cm thick. This layer has a strong heat-insulating effect and prevents the oxygen in the air from reaching the wood, so that further combustion is prevented or at least greatly delayed. Delaying the burning rate buys valuable time for rescue operations and fire extinguishing. And there is also the option to use a protective varnish to protect the Remmers fire protection coating against tackiness and contamination. This protective varnish also has a decorative function and ensures a uniform, matt surface.
It must be noted here that these types of fire protection systems for wood that form an insulating layer cannot be used in areas subject to mechanical stress (furniture, floors, doors etc.). Due to their hydrophilic properties, these systems must not be used in rooms with permanently very high moisture levels.
