Sustainability has long been more than just a trend - it is a central component of responsible corporate action. For us, corporate sustainability means balancing our economic goals with ecological responsibility and social commitment.

Energy management

By investing in our energy infrastructure, we have already been able to significantly reduce our annual CO₂ emissions.

Combined heat and power plant & photovoltaic systems

In addition to existing photovoltaic systems at all production sites and a combined heat and power plant (CHP) plant at our headquarters in Löningen (Germany), we are currently in the process of further converting our energy infrastructure to renewable sources. Another more modern and energy-efficient CHP plant (360 kW) and a PV system with approximately 1.4 MW are currently being implemented.

Introduction of an energy data management system

In order to make our consumption transparent and uncover further potential for saving energy and thus also CO₂ emissions, a comprehensive energy data management system is currently being introduced at all three production sites.
Electrification

Part of our company car fleet has already been converted to electric vehicles, and the appropriate charging infrastructure has been set up. In addition, the classic forklift trucks at our production sites are being continuously replaced by electronically powered vehicles. We have also invested in lighting in recent years and have largely switched to LED technology in our production and administrative areas.

Waste and emissions management

Modern production facilities and a residual quantity concept ensure less waste.

Residual quantity concept

Our “residual quantity concept” reduces the waste generated during varnish production. To date, around twelve tons of material have been collected, which have been reused for its intended purpose as varnish and therefore did not have to be disposed of.
Wastewater treatment plant

In our own wastewater treatment plant, wastewater from production is thoroughly pretreated before it enters the municipal cycle.
Biofilter

The emissions generated during varnish production are broken down by microorganisms in our biofilters.

Cooperation with educational institutions:
We cooperate with all surrounding general and vocational schools to provide career guidance. We also work closely with colleges and universities, for example, by supporting students in the completion of their final theses.

Sponsorship:
We are the main sponsor and name giver of the "Remmers-Hasetal-Marathon", an annually held running event in Löningen. We are proud to support this prestigious event, thereby promoting the local community and encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle. In addition, we support other social and cultural projects at our company locations.

Plant fire department

Since 1987, the fire brigade employed by Remmers GmbH has been a recognised part-time plant fire brigade. The costs of the plant fire brigade are born by the Remmers GmbH. Remmers employees are given time off for drills and operations. A tank fire engine and a hazardous materials trailer are available for hazard control. In addition, eight employees have been trained as company paramedics to provide advanced first aid.

Occupational safety

Zero accident philosophy (Vision Zero):
Our goal is to completely prevent accidents and work-related illnesses. We achieve this through consistent risk assessment, regular safety trainings, targeted risk minimisation measures, and active reporting of near misses. Should an accident or emergency occur, our trained first aiders and evacuation assistants, as well as, since 2024, our eight company paramedics from the plant fire department, are on hand to provide first aid.
Prevention and health promotion:
We offer comprehensive health and prevention programs, including occupational health check-ups, ergonomic workplace design, and mental health services. Our company health management program, "Remmersfit," offers comprehensive health promotion measures, including regular health and fitness checks, nutritional counselling, prevention programs, discounted sports activities through participation in Hansefit, and sporting activities such as joint participation in running events.

As part of the Integrated Management System established at Remmers, we have our continuous improvement reviewed annually by independent, renowned auditors. Continuous improvement in the areas of quality, environmental protection, and occupational safety – certified for over 30 years!

Since 1994: Certified quality management according to ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is a standard that specifies requirements for quality management systems in companies that relate to the entire value chain. By using the "Plan-Do-Check-Act model," the aim is to achieve continuous improvement of individual processes as well as the overall system.

Since 1997: Certified environmental management system according to EMAS III

EMAS is an environmental management system developed by the European Union. It is aimed at companies and organisations and covers all the requirements of ISO 14001 as well as additional requirements. The aim of this system is to achieve continuous improvement in a company's own environmental performance, with the involvement of its employees. After successful implementation of the environmental management system, registered companies must conduct an annual assessment of their direct and indirect environmental aspects and publish an environmental statement. An annual external review is carried out by independent, state-approved and monitored environmental verifiers.

Since 2000: Certified environmental management according to ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management systems that helps companies systematically improve their environmental performance and meet legal requirements. It provides a framework for the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental strategies and practices.

Since 2020: Certified occupational health and safety management system according to ISO 45001

ISO 45001 is a standard published by the International Organisation for Standardization that describes the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system and provides guidance on its implementation. It helps companies optimize processes and achieve sustainable improvements in occupational health and safety management.

Since 2025: International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS)

The ISCC PLUS certification is a global certification program that ensures the traceability and sustainability of materials within the circular economy and bioeconomy. It provides a voluntary pathway for certifying a wide range of resources, including bio-based and recycled materials in the chemical industry, among others. The certification enables verification of traceability throughout the entire supply chain and supports companies in implementing sustainable practices.

Corporate memberships

We are involved in various associations and committees that deal, amongst other things, with the development of a more sustainable (construction) industry.

Membership in the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)

The DGNB is a registered association that was founded in 2007 and is now Europe's largest network for sustainable building. The building certificates awarded by the DGNB are recognised worldwide. The DGNB system aims to ensure that sustainability aspects are taken into account in as many phases of a building's life cycle as possible.
Network partner "Transformation and Sustainability in Oldenburger Münsterland"

The network " Transformation and Sustainability in Oldenburger Münsterland " was founded in early 2023 by the regional Oldenburger Münsterland association. The aim of the network is to connect companies from the districts of Vechta and Cloppenburg on their way to a sustainable future, to offer a platform for exchange, to provide professional impetus, and to enable the transfer of knowledge.
Participation in the "Sustainable Economy Network" of the IHK Oldenburg

The "Sustainable Economy Network" of the IHK Oldenburg (Oldenburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce) serves as a regional platform for networking, exchange, ideas, and solutions for companies in the region. The aim is to promote exchange on sustainability issues, bundle common interests, and develop ideas and solution strategies for sustainability issues and challenges.
Further involvement in association committees

We also actively participate in various association committees in our industry. These include the Green Deal Advisory Group of the Verband der deutschen Lack- und Druckfarbenindustrie (VdL: Association of the German Paint and Printing Ink Industry), the Sustainable Construction Working Group of the Deutsche Bauchemie (DBC: German Construction Chemicals Association), and the DBC's Chemicals Strategy Sustainability Project Group.
