Cathodic corrosion protection

Durability is our focus

Thanks to its many positive properties, reinforced concrete has become one of the most popular construction materials. As well as boasting a high compressive strength, it can be used in almost unlimited ways in combination with reinforcing steel.

Why cathodic corrosion protection?

Reinforced concrete components are exposed to enormous stresses. In particular, as a result of chlorine-induced reinforcement corrosion, e.g. in multi-storey car parks, underground car parks and bridge structures, the planned service life cannot be achieved without interim repairs or further protective measures. Various methods can be used for this.

Alternatives to conventional repair

Conventional repair methods generally involve a great deal of effort and expenditure. In addition to accessing the concrete construction and dismantling and disposing of the damaged concrete, other time-consuming and costly steps include setting up and storing machinery, tools and other building site equipment. It is not uncommon for long downtimes to be involved too.

A real, economical alternative

The best technique currently available is an electrochemical process known as cathodic corrosion protection (CCP). Here, the steel reinforcement is forced to act as a cathode by the connection to an anode.

The primary protective effect is immediate prevention of the corrosion process. It has a long-term, secondary effect too: re-alkalisation of the reinforced concrete.

An important prerequisite for the use of CCP is verification that the existing building fabric still has sufficient load-bearing capacity, which is determined during the building inspection.

The key difference between cathodic corrosion protection for concrete and its traditional application in shipbuilding and container construction is the need for a conductive bedding mortar. This bedding mortar fulfils a key function since it is responsible for evenly distributing the protective current over the surface requiring protection.

Until now, existing product systems were generally used for cathodic corrosion protection, which were tested for conductivity in accordance with DIN EN 12696. However, these test methods do not yield any information about the durability of the products. This led to many systems failing after just a few years.

Special mortar for use in cathodic corrosion protection

Electrical conductivity

Our mortar systems feature optimised electrical conductivity and durability, and guarantee an even distribution of the current over the entire surface.

Service life and safety

The service life and safety are measurably optimised by the use of cathodic corrosion protection (CCP) mortar systems. Monitoring and documentation provide clear proof of the functionality.

Increased service life

For renovations using the CCP system, there is no need for construction site management. It is also possible to keep using the building during the renovation, which avoids any downtime.

Remmers Guarantee
