Current regulations

With establishing the new DIN 1853 series of standards, the previously valid series DIN 18195 on the waterproofing of buildings was withdrawn. Since that time, the contents of DIN 18533 on the waterproofing of components with ground contact have governed waterproofing in the plinth region. With the reorganisation of the national series of standards, more extensive planning principles were drawn up for the selection of waterproofing systems. For example, water impact class W4-E was introduced specially for the plinths of buildings. In addition to waterproofing for protection against capillary water in and beneath walls, the W4-E class also defines waterproofing for protection against splashing water and ground moisture at the wall base. As well as new planning requirements being introduced, waterproofing products that are commonly used but were previously not regulated by any standards have been brought under the scope of the standard. For the ground course region, the inclusion of crack-bridging mineral waterproofing slurries (MWS) is particularly relevant.

Splashing water and ground moisture at the wall base

In order to prevent the capillary absorption of moisture by render, the lowest edge of a wall base render with ground contact must be sealed to at least 50 mm above the upper edge of the ground. This protective measure, which Remmers has been championing for years, is one of the areas of application that can be carried out with crack-bridging mineral waterproofing slurries in accordance with the regulations since July 2017. On the product side, the multi-functional structural waterproofing MB 2K is the top performer in this case. The material is UV-stable, weather-resistant and can also be painted over with binder-rich emulsion paints, such as Remmers Color PA, without any problems.

Plinth waterproofing in timber frame construction

In future, timber frame construction is set to grow in significance as a building practice. At the same time, energy efficiency requirements and the associated specifications concerning damp and humidity are becoming ever more demanding. When in use, buildings are expected to consume as little energy as possible – or even none at all. They must also be resource-efficient and, of course, remain safe over the long term. What this means is that moisture ingress from outside, as well as from inside via condensation, must be reliably prevented. Moisture protection is even more paramount for timber frame construction than it is for buildings constructed from mineral materials. For this reason, DIN 68 800 does not currently stipulate that wooden sleepers may be installed below ground level, as there is a considerable potential for damage here due to increased moisture exposure. This approach is also logical and understandable when it comes to considering the conventional options in relation to structural waterproofing. But at the same time, it is also often very costly, since there is an increasing demand for barrier-free access to buildings. With the advent of new materials for waterproofing buildings, it is therefore worth taking a closer look at this point.
