Preservation of historic timber constructions

Wood has been an important building material in Europe at almost all times. With the exception of the Northern and Eastern regions, the wood-saving but complicated half-timbered construction method was mainly used. Here, all the forces are absorbed by the bars of the timber frame, while the so-called compartments - in the space between the wooden beams - usually ‘only’ have the function of closing the wall surface. Caused by external forces such as wind loads, but especially due to changes in length caused by moisture and temperature, the load-bearing timber construction of such timber-framed buildings deforms. They are therefore referred to as non-dimensionally stable components.

As the mostly solid infill panels can only ‘take part’ in these deformations to a very limited extent, cracks will inevitably appear in the connection areas between the timber and the framework after some time. As there are still no practical materials that can be used to permanently eliminate this weak point, all infill materials used had to be adapted to this situation.

In addition to the highest possible flexibility - to keep the cracks small - the capillary absorbency of the materials used must be a key feature. This ensures that the moisture absorbed in the crack area is transported as quickly as possible - away from the wood - into the timber frame materials and from there released into the environment. At the same time, however, the water absorption of the compartments must be limited during irrigation. A particularly ‘balanced’ system is therefore required with regard to water transport.

Based on the many years of experience of Prof. Manfred Gerner, the renowned timber frame specialist, a complete system for the repair of timber frame buildings has been developed in recent years. In addition to fulfilling the above-mentioned technical requirements, emphasis was placed on using historical building materials as far as possible.

A holistic approach is key

Germany has a large number of historic half-timbered buildings with high economic and cultural value. This stock is jeopardised by inadequate care and unsuitable refurbishment measures. The care and maintenance of half-timbered buildings used to be a straightforward and natural task for users, owners and craftsmen. Everyone involved was familiar with the properties of the few materials used or available. Today, the situation is different.

The demands on living comfort have increased significantly; the types and number of building materials on offer have increased even more dramatically. In contrast, the wealth of experience and knowledge of the ‘half-timbered’ building structure has fallen to almost zero within the last two generations. The consequences are dramatic. The vast majority of the damage to half-timbered buildings seen today is the result of inadequate measures taken in past decades.

The Federal Government, as well as numerous other institutions, have contributed to the fact that the knowledge deficits have been addressed, with the exception of minor problems. The results are now available in various forms, but have not yet sufficiently reached the planning offices and contractors and therefore ultimately the construction sites.

With the Remmers timber frame restoration system, it is now possible for the first time to remedy this deficit. The system ranges from wood protection measures and wood coatings to timber frame mortars and paints for timber frames. For the first time, a holistically harmonised product range is available that will contribute to the sustainable care, structural maintenance and thus long-term protection of valuable cultural assets.
