Thal Kindergarten (AT)
The Thal Kindergarten in Styria is an outstanding example of sustainable and child-friendly construction. Designed by FWB Architects, the new building responds to the growing demand for childcare in the region and sets new standards in terms of both architecture and education. Four identical group rooms are grouped around a central atrium – the “Platzl” – with direct visual contact and plenty of daylight.
Large windows, an airy gallery level for each group room, a covered entrance area, and attractive outdoor spaces create an ideal space for early childhood learning and play. The use of wood as a natural building material underscores the project's commitment to nature. A photovoltaic system and an air-source heat pump ensure that the building is particularly energy-efficient.

-
Wood preservation - windows and house doors
- Building type:
- Schools / universities / museums
- Task:
- The exposed wooden surfaces - especially the windows, lift-and-slide doors, entrance portals, panic doors, and fire doors - had to be permanently protected against the elements. At the same time, the highest standards of environmental compatibility, surface quality, and child-friendly safety had to be met. Since the larch wood components were installed not only indoors but also in heavily used outdoor areas, a high-performance, elastic coating system with UV and moisture protection was required.
